On Monday I hosted the Mad Libs Challenge for Bout of Books, and I wanted to share some of my favorites! There were some great stories that people came up with, but the best part was probably the adjective-noun combinations for the artifacts.
The Lost Couch
The Reluctant Tulip
The Curious Milk Carton
The Yiddish Telegraph
The Mysterious Ketchup
These were all amazing!
We also had some interesting occupations going after the artifacts… jesters, typists, shopgirls…
Anyway, here are some complete stories for your entertainment. Some of these sounded like stories I’d actually read, while some of them were just too fun not to share. There are plenty more, of course; you can visit the original post to check out all of the reader-generated Mad Libs.
(One quick note, some of you caught me on this. Through my various versions of the story, there were several changes, and originally I had specified [male character name] and [female character name] at different points. When I simplified it down to just one, I made it gender neutral and put in “his/her” and “he/she” markers so you could choose the appropriate word… but I forgot to take out “guy.” Some of you changed it, some of you didn’t. Sorry about that. In reposting these, I’ll go ahead and change “guy” to “girl” if it’s a female name and the original comment didn’t.)
I just read the greatest book!
This girl Emma ends up in the middle of a polysyllabic conspiracy. Turns out her ancestors were pirates, and she might be the key to finding the Scarlet Crucible. It’s a mythic artifact that disappeared centuries ago, and now a shadowy group of detectives are looking for it. No one knows what uncovering it might do, but these guys are willing to bewitch for it.
I won’t say anything else. But believe me, if you like impossible stories with vagrants and peas, you have to read this one.

It’s a mythic artifact that disappeared centuries ago, and now a shadowy group of warriors are looking for it. No one knows what uncovering it might do, but these guys are willing to crash for it.
I won’t say anything else. But believe me, if you like twisted stories with darkness and betrayals, you have to read this one.

This girl, Sarah Cummings, ends up in the middle of a beautiful conspiracy. Turns out her ancestors were pirates, and she might be the key to finding the Distant Mirror. It’s a mythic artifact that disappeared centuries ago, and now a shadowy group of tutors are looking for it. No one knows what uncovering it might do, but these guys are willing to poison for it.
I won’t say anything else. But believe me, if you like dangerous stories with pawns and emeralds, you have to read this one.

This woman Antonia ends up in the middle of an unmarked conspiracy. Turns out her ancestors were pirates, and she might be the key to finding the Thirteenth Doll. It’s a mythic artifact that disappeared centuries ago, and now a shadowy group of riders are looking for it. No one knows what uncovering it might do, but these guys are willing to murder for it.
I won’t say anything else. But believe me, if you like black stories with mists and ghosts, you have to read this one.

(Huh… all my favorites used female characters… interesting.)
