First posts are hard.
It’s probably not a great idea to start off my blog by whining, but there it is. It’s a lot of pressure to create that first impression. What if I overwhelm you with too much information? Or bore you with not enough? I don’t want to skip the introductions, but I don’t want it to read like I’m filling out a survey. The cruel joke is that this post will soon be buried under newer ones and it won’t actually be a first impression for any but a few people, but that doesn’t make the pressure any less.
To start, I guess I’d better clear up that title. Personally, my first thought when I hear “cheap thrill” is something temporarily exciting but that quickly fades. However, the internet has taught me that others might have a slightly more (*ahem*) specific interpretation. These are not the kinds of cheap thrills I will be discussing. No, I’m here about books. Thrillers, to be precise.
I’ve been reading book blogs for a while, but as much as I have scoured the internet looking for them, there really aren’t many out there that focus on thrillers. I’ve found several on literary fiction, both contemporary and classic. About a bajillion YA blogs. Lots of genre-focused ones as well, but thriller doesn’t seem to be a genre that’s commonly featured. The closest I usually find are of the mystery/crime variety, but these just aren’t the same; I’ll take a large-scale, high-stakes thriller over a whodunit any day.
Of course, there are plenty of eclectic book blogs as well, and these are the ones I tend to be drawn to the most, as they match my own reading habits (i.e., anything that looks interesting to me). Still, thrillers are what I keep coming back to. It’s my go-to genre when I just need a fun escape, and their lack of representation in the blogosphere surprised me. So, ever since I started toying with the idea of creating a book blog of my own, I knew what my focus would be.
As for the cheap part… I rarely purchase books. I’d say I do roughly 95% of my reading through the library — I’m lucky enough to have a pretty great one — and I have to really enjoy a book, and know I’m going to read it again and again, before I’ll spend money on it. (And even then, I don’t buy nearly as many as I’d like.)
So, much as I tried to reject this blog title for its… hrmm… possible implications, shall we say… nothing else seemed to fit. And in the end I really do like it. Apologies to those who may have stumbled across this blog looking for something completely different.
For everyone else, I plan to update a few times a week with reviews and other bookish thoughts. In the meantime, feel free to explore. I’ve got RSS and social media links on the sidebar, and important pages linked in the menu up top. Nothing too exciting, but at the very least you can learn a little more about the woman behind the stack of library books.
